ROBOTS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

Since the beginnings of civilisation man has had a fascination for a human-like creation that would assist him. Man had discovered mechanics and the means of creating complex mechanisms which would perform repetitive functions. Technological advances were slow but there were more complex machines, generally limited to a very small number, which performed more grandiose functions such as those invented by Hero of Alexandria. We are interested in achievement associated with the construction of military robots, space robots, medical robots, etc.

ANDROS F6A: Unmanned Remote Robot for EOD

The "ANDROS" is a class of remotely-controlled bomb, disposal robot used by the American military as well as by SWAT and law enforcement groups. The basic kit includes the LCD monitor, the RONS robot itself, the communications cable supply and the applicable tools needed to keep the RONS functioning at peak performance. The ANDROS family of robots is designed by the REMOTEC firm, operating as a subsidiary of defense giant Northrop Grumman. Northrop claims to have some 1,000 ANDROS robots in circulation worldwide. There are five major ANDROS variants currently in circulation with the base model being the "F6A".
Description of ANDROS F6A:
1. Its dimensions are 52" x 29" x 56.5" (L X W X H);
2. It weighs 485 lbs;
3. Features an extending manipulator arm (25lb limit) and four cameras:
a) color camera with full light, zoom, pan and tilt functions;
b) camera wich serves the operator with 216:1 zoom and image stabilization;
c) the extension arm maintains a third camera with 40:1 zoom capability;
d) 24-inch camera extender);
4. 80-watt adjustable halogen light and an optional IR lens;
5. Two-way weatherproof communications system offers the ANDROS operator full listening capability by way of a microphone and speaker
6. The gripper arm is fully positional with seven degrees of freedom and can be fitted with optional sensor or weapon systems;
7. Pneumatic wheels can replace the base tracked system;
8. The integrated track system allows for traverse across a variety of uneven surfaces including ditches (up to 21-inches), obstacles (up to 18-inches) and stairs (up to 45.75 degree slopes);
9. Top speed is approximately 3.5 miles per hour and the turning radius is essentially the length of the robot thanks to its track system.;
10. ANDROS accessories include the control station, audio/video attachments, various manipulator arm tools, optional sensors, spare battery kit and maintenance kits.

Military robots: XM1219 Armed Robotic Vehicle


Military robots are autonomous robots or remote-controlled devices designed for military applications. Such systems are currently being researched by a number of militaries.

The XM1219 Armed Robotic Vehicle is a mobility platform based on the MULE Platform. The ARV-A-L MULE Vehicle (XM1219) will feature an integrated weapons and reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA) package to support the dismounted infantry’s efforts to locate and destroy enemy platforms and positions. The ARV-A-L will support both anti-tank and anti-personnel weapons platforms that will be remotely operated by network linked soldiers.

* Transportable inside a C-130 Hercules and CH-47 Chinook.

* Transportable, slung under a UH-60 Black Hawk.

* Climb more than a 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) step.

* Cross a 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) gap.

* Traverse side slopes of 40 percent.

* Ford water obstacles over 0.5 metres (1 ft 8 in).

* Cross obstacles as high as 0.5 metres (1 ft 8 in).
